Questions frequently asked by our customers

Can the top layers be of differing thicknesses?

No, the production method means that the top layers are always of the same thickness. It is, of course, possible to sand down a top layer, but this would result in additional costs.

Are the AFS elements flammable?

No, the AFS elements are a single-product sandwich element which works without adhesive or the addition of other components.

How are the top layers attached to the foam core?

The production process means that the connection between the top layer and the foam core can be seen as welded. It is a metallic connection.

Are the AFS elements recyclable?

Because the AFS elements are a pure aluminium alloy, recycling is very easy. The AFS elements are well integrated into the cycle of resources, while scrap and remains can be sold.

How resistant are the AFS elements to corrosion?

The aluminium alloys used give the AFS elements good resistance to corrosion, even when uncoated. As in aluminium, any corrosion is limited to a small area, such as where there is damage. As with aluminium, the elements should be exposed neither to a strongly acid nor to a strongly alkaline environment. The AFS elements also display good resistance to corrosive influences in a seawater environment.

How high a temperature can AFS elements be exposed to?

Constructions made from AFS elements or the elements themselves can be exposed to temperatures of 350°C (623°K) for extended periods, or to significantly higher temperatures for short periods, without damage to the mechanical characteristics. The case of application must be clarified and agreed in detail in this case.

How can AFS elements be further processed?

AFS can be handled just like normal aluminium. All sheet metal processes are also possible for AFS elements without problems.

Can the surface of AFS elements be coated?

Yes, normal colour designs can be achieved using powder or liquid coating processes. The foam or foam core can also be coated. It is important that the elements are completely dry before pre-treatment, in order to prevent any remaining moisture escaping from the foam core. Appropriate improvement measures should be taken in the case of unevenness on the top of the AFS elements caused during production.

Can AFS elements be anodised?

Because of the silicon in the foam core, it is very difficult to anodise AFS elements. The silicon leads to blackening. It is not possible to control the anodising process with any accuracy.
